Old Harbor Distilling Company, the first distillery in downtown San Diego, approached Caava Design to create a visual system spanning distillery branding, spirits packaging and web design.
We developed the brand around San Diego’s maritime character, giving Old Harbor a weathered, seasoned visual language that could extend from bottles to marketing and advertising. For the product line, the challenge was creating meaningful distinction while using a consistent bottle format.
Our solution was a Spirit Symbol System: a distinct branded symbol and color for each product, supported by a strong typographic hierarchy. The approach gives every spirit its own identity while keeping the overall line recognizable as Old Harbor, and provides a scalable structure for adding new products as the distillery grows.

A brand that helped Old Harbor grow well beyond launch.
Old Harbor launched with a distinctive identity and packaging system built to grow with the distillery. Founder Michael Skubic later reported continued growth and new customers, and what began as a branding engagement became a long-term creative partnership. Years later, Caava was still helping Old Harbor expand the brand into new products, including the Adventure Series.
